Companies such as SmallHD and TV Logic have a large range of field monitors with a number of features. Until now, the maximum resolution of basically every onboard monitor has been 720p.The new VFM-058W 5.5″ LCD Monitor from TV Logic is going to change that.
SmallHD makes great monitors at an affordable price. We’ve rented out their monitors for a few years now and were stoked when we heard about their new DP7 Pro OLED onboard monitor. It produces a phenomenal image and a ton of features that shooters want.
Earlier this month, Canon released a firmware update enabling clean HDMI out on the 5D Mark III. This means you can record less compressed footage to an external recorder. Everyone seemed very excited, so we decided to do a test comparing the internally recorded H.264 footage to the externally recorded ProRes footage with an Atomos Ninja 2. Watch the video and read our thoughts about the test below.
Last Fall, Canon announced that an exciting new firmware update for 5D Mark III would be coming out this year. The news of the new firmware was so exciting because it allows the Mark III to send out uncompressed HDMI output.
The new Canon 5D Mark III Firmware 1.2.1 can be downloaded here.
All Stray Angel 5D Mark III’s will have the new update for rentals.
Fantastic news! Canon has just announced that a new firmware for the 5D Mark III is coming out that “significantly improves the camera’s performance and usability”.
The most exciting part of the firmware update is that it will allow for uncompressed HDMI output. This means you can record umcompressed video data from the Mark III to an external recorder. Also with the firmware update there will be improved AF functionality.
The bad news? The firmware won’t be available until April 2013. At least we all have something to look forward to…
I have been pretty happy with the generic Canon batteries I’ve bought over the last few years and at 7 bucks (!) these are worth a try. Monoporice has been a good resource too, they have some amazingly cheap HDMI cables. Some of them have held up, some of them haven’t, now I just send out a spare with every cable and don’t worry about it if they come back broken.
The secret to generic camera gear is remember that these companies change manufacturers all the time, you’ll buy a product and have it be great and then buy the same product a month later and have it fall apart. This means there are some great deals to be had but it also means don’t invest too heavily at any one time and always get a spare!
Stray Angel is proud to announce that we are now renting the Canon 5D Mark III for all our customers in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. The 5D Mark III is the latest from Canon and has an amazing ability to shoot in low levels of light. This edition has improved in all areas for Canon a 60fps, reduced noise, HD output, AII-I Codec at 100mb, and CF and SD card slots.
If you’re interested in renting, you can check out the 5D Mark III on our website.
Today I learned that even if you accidentally format a memory card you may not have lost the contents. Canon cameras perform a sort of soft erase when you format the card in camera. They remove the files from easy access and mark their locations as available space to be written over but they do not actually overwrite the area with random numbers or new data which would make recovery impossible.
Canon does not endorse any particular software solution for recovering files but many of the major brands including Lexar and Sandisk bundle recovery software with their cards and I’ve heard reports that many pieces of software work well to recover data if you use them right away after you accidentally format the card.
As I was shooting my circles of confusion video, I realized I had the perfect set up to show how bokeh works. I’m not sure how to pronounce it but hopefully I’m close;)
Here’s the first video in a series I’m going to do on depth of field. I really want to get into the nuts and bolts of how depth of field works and how to control it. To that end, I think the place to start is with circles of confusion, a concept that informs almost every other aspect of DOF. As always, please feel free to comment if you have any questions!!!
