The PMW-200 is the newest successor to Sony’s previous PMW-EX1 camera. If you’ve ever used the EX-1 before the PMW200 will seem very familiar to you. The design of the body and the menu are both similar to its older brother.

While this camera has several upgrades over the EX1, probably the most exciting new feature is that PMW 200 can record at 50 Mbps MPED HD422 codec as well as MXF recording. It can support up to four hours of recording of 50 Mbps MPEG HD422 recording when using two 64GB SxS cards. This makes it an ideal camera for broadcast rentals.

The camera also features three ½” Full HD 1920X1080 Exmor CMOS sensors. These sensors support a low 56dB noise and a wide dynamic range. All of these things make it a great camera to rent if you’re using it in low light situations.

Other useful functions of the PMW200 include slow/quick-motion playback, focus magnification, slow shutter, shutter angle settings, and picture cache recording. It also has four-channel audio recording, as well as HD/SDI and composite/HD-Y outputs. It also has six gamma settings and four HyperGamma settings.

The lens that the Sony PMW-200 features the same Fujinon lens as the EX1. It has a 14x zoom, and the 5.8-81.2 focal length range is the 35mm equivalent of 30-439mm. It has a fast aperture of f/1.9 which is just another reason that this camera is great to use in low light.

Since the camera can record in HD442, HD440, and DVCAM it is fully compatible with all past and present XDCAM workflows, which is sure to make editors happy and post a breeze. You can also easily switch between NSTC and PAL recording formats via the menu should the need arise.

Another great added feature that will make shooters happy is the streamlines clip review. With a lot of cameras you have to flip a switch between shooting and playback mode, but the PMW-200 will let you simply press the thumbnail button and the thumbnail from each of your previously recorded clips will be displayed. Not a huge deal, but anything that makes production in the field even a little bit easier is always welcome.
