We no longer rent the Atomos Ninja 2 recorder. Please see our recorder rentals page for other options.
The Atomos Ninja 2 is a really great tool that filmmakers can use to record 10 bit high quality recording in Apple ProRes format. It works by connecting to a cameras HDMI port, and then recording a less compressed image by bypassing the cameras internal recorder and recording directly to an HDD inside the Atomos Ninja 2.
If you have a camera that records to a compressed codec such as H.264, you can simply connect it to the Ninja and capture a 10 bit HQ, 4:2:2 image. You can either use HDD or SDD drives in the Ninja. A 750 GB drive can hold about 16 hours of Apple ProRes video. The drives are also hot swappable, meaning if you are in the middle of a take the Ninja will simply swap recording to the second HDD so you don’t have to cut. This is especially important during documentaries or any kind of live shooting. It also has a dual battery system, which enable you to swap batteries while the Atomos Ninja is still in use. This is very helpful on set so you don’t have to interrupt shooting to stay powered up.
The external recorder also acts as a monitor with 16:9 800×480 resolution. You can control everything via the touchscreen monitor. The recorder performs 4 main functions – play, stop, record, and monitor, each function is accessible and clearly visible. It has a ¼” headphone out that enables you to monitor the audio level adjustments. You can also access the disk recorder from a remote location using a LANC loop. You can connect the recorder to a Macbook, iMac, or MacPro, via Firewire 800 or USB 2/3.
This rental includes (2) 250 GB 2.5″ HD Drives for a total of 500GB of storage.
