We no longer rent the Atomos Samurai. Please see the Atomos Shogun rental page instead.
The Atomos Samurai is an HD-SDI external recorder that captures 10-bit HD resolutions video. It can capture in either Apple’s ProRes codec or Avid’s DNxHD codec.
The Samurai also supports 12 channels of embedded SDI audio and also has 2 channel line in inputs as well as a headphone output. You can also use the 5” Samurai as a high-resolution on-board monitor. It offers 800×480 resolution and touchscreen technology.
Powered by two hot swappable batteries, each capable of at least 2.5 hours , a maximum of 9 hours of power. This rental includes (1) 240 GB SSD, and (1) 1 TB SSD, this give you about 18 hours of high-quality Apple ProRes footage.
The Atomos Samurai has a few advantages over the Ninja, including the ability to do timecode, genlock, and you can synchronize multiple units.
The Atomos Ninja 2 is a really great tool that filmmakers can use to record 10-bit high-quality recording in Apple ProRes format. It works by connecting to a cameras HDMI port, and then recording a less compressed image by bypassing the cameras internal recorder and recording directly to an HDD inside the Atomos Ninja 2.
If you have a camera that records to a compressed codec such as H.264, you can simply connect it to the Ninja and capture a 10 bit HQ, 4:2:2 image. You can either use HDD or SDD drives in the Ninja. A 750 GB drive can hold about 16 hours of Apple ProRes video. The drives are also hot-swappable, meaning if you are in the middle of a take the Ninja will simply swap recording to the second HDD so you don’t have to cut. This is especially important during documentaries or any kind of live shooting. It also has a dual battery system, which enable you to swap batteries while the Atomos Ninja is still in use. This is very helpful on set so you don’t have to interrupt shooting to stay powered up.
The external recorder also acts as a monitor with 16:9 800×480 resolution. You can control everything via the touchscreen monitor. The recorder performs 4 main functions – play, stop, record, and monitor, each function is accessible and clearly visible. It has a ¼” headphone out that enables you to monitor the audio level adjustments. You can also access the disk recorder from a remote location using a LANC loop. You can connect the recorder to a Macbook, iMac, or MacPro, via Firewire 800 or USB 2/3.
This rental includes (2) 250 GB 2.5″ HD Drives for a total of 500GB of storage.
