Canon is really hyping up their new 70D DSLR as a “game changer” due to its continuous auto-focus feature. They gave the 70D to BBC Cameraman, Johnnie Behiri, to use in the field and see how useful the autofocus is. Johnnie shot two videos: a home-video style shoot to test the autofocus, and mini-documentary on a street artist to test the image quality.

“I’m doing alright”- Canon 70D beta quality camera video review from Johnnie Behiri on Vimeo.

“40mm vs autofocus”-Canon 70D beta quality camera autofocus test from Johnnie Behiri on Vimeo.

Both videos were shot at ISOs between 100-320, and as you can see the image has a lot of noise, especially for such low ISOs. This could (hopefully) be due to the fact that this is a BETA 70D and not a finished product.

I think the auto focus is actually pretty good. While you wouldn’t want to use it for a narrative film, it could come in handy for a lot of documentaries.

What do you think? Is the Canon 70D DSLR a game changer?
