Now Renting: Zoom H6 Portable Handheld Recorder

The Zoom H4 and H4n Handy recorders become a big hit a few years ago thanks to the DSLR Filmmaking revolution.

This year, Zoom has released the brand new Zoom H6 Handy Recorder and has improved the features to include a color LCD screen, up to six XLR inputs, and an interchangeable mic system.

Our very own Josh Burrows has had his hands on the Zoom H6 ever since it walked through our doors. He put together a video to cover the features:

Interchangeable Microphone System

The Zoom H6 has a revolutionary interchangeable microphone system that makes it the most versatile handheld recorder on the market. As you can see, there are many mic choices.

The H6 comes standard with an X/Y microphone, which is good for covering a wide area yet still capturing the sources in the center.

There is also an MS “Mid-Side” microphone, ideal for filmmaking and studio recording. This type of recording allows you to actually adjust the width of the stereo image after it has been recorded.

Probably the most useful microphone for videographers and filmmakers is the shotgun mic. An especially great choice if you’re doing some DSLR documentary or interview work, just mount it and the zoom via a hotshoe mount to the top of your camera.

There’s also an interchangeable attachment for the Zoom H6 that isn’t a microphone at all, instead, it’s two additional XLR ports. This brings the total possible number of XLR inputs on the H6 to 6. That’s pretty impressive!

Color LCD Screen

The new color LCD screen on the Zoom H6 recorder is one of it’s biggest improvements. Before, on previous Zoom models, it could be rather difficult to see the screen if you were somewhere really bright or you were just far away from the screen.

XLR Inputs

Thanks to the interchangeable mic system and the XLR capsule, the Zoom H6 can record up to six tracks simultaneously. Each input also has its own physical knob to adjust record levels.

All in all, we think that the Zoom H6 is a big step up from the H4n. Filmmakers will continue to love how portable it is as well as cherish its new, versatile features.
