The GoPro HERO8 Black supports up to UHD 4K video resolutions, and time-lapse, up to 1080p240 slow motion, and super-slow-motion video. Still images can be captured in up to 12MP resolution in bursts of up to 30 images per second with the updated SuperPhoto with HDR support that helps reduce blur and enhance detail in low-light situations. It also features an updated Night-Lapse function to shoot and process up to 4K time-lapses at night. The LiveBurst function allows you to record 1.5 seconds before and after your photo to give you more choices for the best frame. The lens field of view (FOV) options increase to four modes: Narrow, Linear at 24.4mm, Wide at 16.5mm, and SuperView at 15.1mm.

Like its predecessor, the HERO8 Black supports direct streaming to Facebook Live. It’s also waterproof to 33′, suiting it for surfing, snorkeling, and swimming activities. Separately available floats and housings are available for additional water support and even deeper underwater activities down to 196′. The touchscreen provides quick and easy management, but when your hands are full, the HERO8 Black understands 15 voice commands in over ten languages and accents so you can verbally control the HERO8 Black. Just shout “GoPro, take a photo,” and your HERO8 will use your current settings to snap a photo, making selfies a breeze.

Living up to its action camera moniker, the GoPro Hero 7 Black is designed to capture super-smooth footage of your latest, greatest, not-so-serene adventures.  The Hero 7 Black comes with new ‘Hypersmooth’ electronic image stabilization, which GoPro founder Nick Woodman called “the best in-camera video stabilization in any camera, ever”.  The Hero 7 Black’s HyperSmooth stabilization produces a gimbal-like flow without the added bulk of a gimbal.

Related to HyperSmooth is a new time-lapse mode called TimeWarp.  TimeWarp allows you to capture super-stabilized time-lapse videos while you move about a scene. You can increase the speed up to 30x to turn longer activities into shareable moments.

The new SuperPhoto feature is GoPro’s attempt to replicate the intelligent auto modes seen on smartphones which can automatically recognize scenes and apply the optimal camera settings such as HDR, local tone mapping, or noise reduction. In addition to recognizing scenes, GoPro says the Hero 7 Black will be able to detect faces and smiles; an ability that will also help it to pick the right clips for its automated QuikStories edit available on the Quik app.

Finally, the Hero 7 Black is the first GoPro that allows you to live stream directly to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, and Twitch at 720p output; a feature that will undoubtedly be a big selling point for those with dreams of internet stardom!

There is another new feature, “TapFly”, that is aimed at beginner pilots. When TapFly mode is engaged, it eliminates the need to use the stick controller. You can use the app and simply tap a waypoint on the screen. The Phantom 4 will then fly itself there, using the best path and avoiding obstacles in its way.

The most exciting new feature of the Phantom 4 for filmmakers is the “ActiveTrack” mode. This setting allows you to pick a moving object (such as an actor) and then the drone will track and follow it, keeping it in the frame.

Guidelines:

1. Drones between .55 and 55 lbs must be registered.
2. Registration is mandatory in the U.S.
3. If you already own a drone, you have until February 19th, 2016 to register it.
4. If your drone was bought after December 21st, 2016 you must register it before it’s first flight.

Failure to register an aircraft can result in civil penalties up to $27,500. Criminal penalties for failure to register can include fines of up to $250,000 under 18 U.S.C. 3571 and/or imprisonment up to three years.

How To Register Your Drone:

1. Be at least 13 years old.
2. Head to the FAA’s registry page.
3. Register with your email address, physical address, and credit/debit card to verify.

Once you’ve registered your drone, you must mark it with its new unique registration number in a location that doesn’t require tooling to access it. Many owners have decided to put the number inside the battery compartment. According to the FAA, the registration will be good for up to three years.

This handheld mount should prove to be very convenient for filmmakers who go out and shoot drone & stock photography in rural areas. It basically allows you to fit all the tools you need to do both aerial and handheld shots in a single case.

The DJI Inspire 1 handheld mount also has an input for an external mic, and could easily be used to shoot documentaries.

DJI says the handheld gimbal will be available in Q2 of this year. At the time of writing, no pricing information has been released.

The DJI Inspire is a big step up from the Phantom in many ways, though it’s worth noting that it comes in at about three times the price. The Inspire 1 includes its own built-in 4K, 3-axis detachable gimbal camera. The drone’s arms lift up when in flight so that you can get a full, unobstructed 360-degree pan with the camera.

The Inspire 1 uses a more advanced GPS-based stabilization system able to hold a position even when experiencing wind interference. It can compensate for overzealous pilot inputs to help avoid stalling, automatically brings the aircraft home in the event of signal loss or at the press of a button, and makes possible a number of semi-automated flight modes enabled through the app. There’s also an “indoor” mode which relies on Optical Flow technology – essentially a special camera – to provide stability where GPS is unavailable.
