Earlier this year, the Panasonic Varicam 35 got a baby brother, the Varicam LT.  Much like the Varicam 35, the Varicam LT features a 4K Super 35mm sensor and a unique dual native ISO setting at 800 and 5,000, but in a lighter and more compact one-body design at a more affordable price.

Panasonic designed the Varicam LT as a solo operator camera unlike the larger Varicam 35, which was made to for commercial crews.  The Varicam LT camera body weighs under 6lbs, and by the time you add an AB battery, a viewfinder, baseplate, rods, and a zoom lens, the weight can easily approach 20 lbs or more, which is very typical for higher-end cameras in this class.

Filmmakers are eagerly awaiting the release of Panasonic’s new compact 5.7K cinema camera later this month.  The AU-EVA1  camera will be a great affordable alternative to the VariCam as it is priced at $7,495.  The EVA1 will be the newest entry into the sub $8,000 4K cinema cameras and is set to go head-to-head with the Canon C200, the Sony FS7, and the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro.

The EVA1 can record in several formats and compression rates and offers up to 10bit 4:2:2 in 4K.  For in-camera recording, you can capture in DCI 4K (4096 x 2160), UHD (3840 x 2160), 2K (2048 x 1080), Full HD (1920 x 1080), and HD (1280 x 720).  In a future firmware upgrade, EVA1 will offer All Intra compression for in-camera recording and 5.7K RAW output to third party recorders.

The EVA1’s 5.7K 35mm sensor delivers nearly twice as many photosites than 4K, which will yield crystal clear images with increased color information when downsampled to 4K, UHD, 2K, or even 720p.  Panasonic claims that the increased color information will result in a finer, more accurate finished image.

The EVA1 weighs in at only 2.65lbs with a compact form factor of 6.69” H x 5.31” W x 5.23” D, making it perfect to use with a drone, gimbal, or jib arm.  The camera does not include an EVF, which means shooters will have to only rely on the LCD screen to capture images.

You probably remember the Panasonic DVX100 back from the early 2000s. It was basically the first consumer-affordable digital camera that could shoot video at 24p (without interlacing). This, of course, made it very popular with independent filmmakers.

Now, well over a decade later, Panasonic is getting ready to release the DVX200. Unlike its SD predecessor, the DVX200 will shoot in stunning 4K.

Director Of Photography Sebastian Wiegärtner shot some beautiful footage with a pre-production DVX200 model. He says that it “is the perfect camera for Documentaries and fast TV work, where you have to be fast and where you still want to achieve a cinematic image. Due to the M4/3 sensor, it’s way easier to focus than with a Super 35 or Full Frame sensor.”

Check out the Panasonic DVX 200 footage Wiegärtner shot below:

Here are the current specs we know about the Panasonic DVX200:

  • 4/3 MOS Sensor
  • DCI 4K 24P, UHD 4K Up to 60p
  • Variable Frame Rate Up to 120 FPS in FHD
  • MP4 / MOV Recording in 4K
  • 2 x SD Cards Slots
  • HDMI 2.0, 3G-SDI Output
  • Native ISO: 500
  • Will Cost Less Than $5,000
