Unveiling the Finer Details

Low light is often a photographer’s Achilles’ heel. At previous events, capturing the intricate lighting, the expressions on the musicians’ faces, and the audience’s fervor was always a challenge. However, with the RED V-Raptor, renowned for its high-speed 8K sensor, our perception of ‘capturing dark moments’ changed. This cinematic powerhouse allowed us to unveil the unseen; details that were otherwise lost in the shadows came alive.

Technical Brilliance

The camera’s remarkable 35.4-megapixel sensor delivered a level of detail that’s rarely seen in cinema cameras under low light. Particularly given the V-Raptor’s impressive 16+ stops of dynamic range, we no longer had to choose between preserving highlights or shadows. Even at ISO 1600, this camera absorbed the available light, producing near-noiseless images (images used are without any additional noise reduction from DaVinci Resolve).

Real-world Performance

Words and technical specs can only convey so much. To illustrate the conditions this camera tackled: the main stage was only backlit by 4 Astera Tubes (2 Hyperions + 2 Titan Tubes), and the side soundstage had 18 Titan Tubes hanging from the ceiling. As the artists performed, we captured dramatic silhouettes while retaining exceptional detail and a vibrant array of colors—elements that might have been muted or completely missed with other cameras. With the V-Raptor, each moment’s vivid color and sharpness felt almost surreal.

Ghost Towns was shot on the 6K RED DRAGON, and the filmmakers were able to achieve an 8K resolution endproduct. Some clips were stitched together in After Effects, while other clips were simply upscaled from 6K to accomplish that 8K goal.

RED WEAPON is a full-frame 8192 x 4320 (8K) sensor. If you have an existing RED that you want to upgrade, you might consider signing up now, as there’s a $10,000 difference in price before – and after – the conversion.

How much does the RED WEAPON cost? At the time of writing, you would need to buy the 6K WEAPON Brain for $49,500, then pay an additional $10,000 for the 8K upgrade (when available), making the sum total $59,500. Of course, that’s just for the bare camera; you’ll also need tens of thousands of dollars in gear to get shooting.

While we don’t everything yet, here’s what we do know at the time of writing:

• Upgrade lines that were performing the MX to DRAGON upgrade will become DRAGON to WEAPON upgrade lines, so if you haven’t upgraded to DRAGON yet, you will probably want to do that ASAP
• There is more than one WEAPON and there is a path for SCARLET (DRAGON) owners to go to WEAPON. (Direct quote from Jarred)
• Upgrades to DRAGON will cost more after NAB this year, so upgrade now if you can.
• There will be different I/O modules that give various configurations of HD-SDI/HDMI. (There will be an adapter to make current LEMO monitoring/touchscreen options work with Weapon.)
• WEAPON brain is almost half an inch shorter than the EPIC brain.
• REDVOLT XL batteries work fine… the existing REDVOLT XL module does not.
• It looks like Mini-Mags will be the only media option. (source)

PRIORITY 1: “EPIC-M DRAGON / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” Upgrades*

PRIORITY 2.1: “EPIC-M DRAGON New Camera Orders: After all owners of “EPIC-M / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” have been notified they are eligible to send in cameras for upgrade*, new EPIC-M DRAGON orders will begin to be processed.

PRIORITY 2.2: EPIC-X DRAGON Upgrades: After all owners of “EPIC-M / Early Adopter / Purchased EPIC-X Within 30 Days of NAB” have been notified they are eligible to send in cameras for upgrade*, EPIC-X DRAGON upgrades will begin to be processed.**

“The Dragon is handily 2 stops over the previous Epic MX sensor which in its own right is a stellar sensor. We found ourselves able to expose and ISO where we would not have been able to before without being in the outer limits. I say handily 2 stops over because it’s actually more than that but subjectivity and personal sensitivity to noise floor is for everyone to decide on their own above that. I think one of the bigger eye-openers is the slow motion. Higher fps performance at seemingly ludicrous compression ratios. We shot 6K 2:1 Anamorphic 2x at 80fps 17:1. That’s right 17 to bloody 1. You can see in the piece that the compression looks nowhere near that. Also, one of the biggest leaps of all is being able to shoot lower ISO’s without highlight penalties or pinky purple weirdness invading your upper registers.”

“Meet the Carbon Dragon. 

With a Carbon fiber shell and side SSD matched with a machined magnesium body and machined magnesium lens mount it cuts off a full pound from the standard Epic weight. It takes a tremendous amount of time to build each one of these but they are quite incredible.

We are also excited to announce that the first 2 Carbon Dragons are being used by HBO for Game of Thrones, a fitting first flight for one of our all-time favorite shows.

Carbon Dragons will be available to purchase on a one-by-one, build-to-order basis starting at the end of October for $50k, first come, first serve.”
