We’ve previously written about the GH4’s specs and have been anxiously awaiting its arrival ever since. Recently, we received our very first Panasonic GH4 camera, and we’re happy to announce that the GH4 & YAGH interface is available to rent right here at Stray Angel Films!

Since the camera arrived, we’ve had some fun taking photos and shooting some 4K test footage. We sent Chris Sheffield out for an afternoon with the GH4 to see what the internal 4K recording looks like.

Panasonic Clears Up Spec Rumors About The GH4 & YAGH Box

Panasonic’s new 4K GH4 DSLR (shipping next month), has ignited the blogosphere because of its impressive specs and affordable price point. Matt Frazer from Panasonic recently sat down with Zacuto to clear up the GH4’s spec rumors once and for all.

The full Zacuto First Look GH4 video is a little long, but it’s an entertaining and informative watch:

Previously, it wasn’t clear what kind of 4K you could record internally, to the YAGH, or send out via HDMI. According to Matt from Panasonic, here’s the breakdown:

8-bit 4:2:0 4K internally recorded to SD Cards
10-bit 4:2:2 4K from the HDMI port (Currently, there are no 4K HDMI external recorders, but that will likely change soon)
10-bit 4:2:2 4K via the YAGH box

Panasonic also confirmed that the YAGH box needs external power.

Other interesting tidbits from the video include Matt alluding to the base ISO being somewhere around 800, claiming that ‘800’ is what Panasonic engineers set to 0 dB in camera. They guys from Zacuto also mentioned that they are producing a rig that will allow you to use your lens like a servo via a handle.

Panasonic’s 4K GH4 DSLR Gets Price & Release Date

The much-buzzed-about Panasonic Lumix 4K GH4 finally has an official price and release date! Previously, there was speculation that the GH4 would be “under $2,000”. While most believed this meant it would be listed at $1999, today Panasonic gave the official word the 4K GH4 will list for $1,698.

At the time of writing, Panasonic gave the GH4 an official release date of early May 2014. So just after NAB, these cameras should start hitting the shelves of retail locations nationwide.

We also have more information about the YAGH interface (or “brick” or “box” as some are calling it) from Panasonic. The YAGH gives you XLR inputs as well as the ability to output full 4:2:2 10-bit 4K. It will be priced at $1999. If you purchase both the YAGH box and the GH4 together, you can get a discount of almost $400.

Everything You Need To Know About Panasonic’s 4K GH4 Camera

The Panasonic GH4 is an exciting and affordable 4K camera arriving on the scene this year. While many have been “wowed” by the 4K Blackmagic camera for only $2K, we think that the 4K GH4 has a lot of features that would make production less of a headache for filmmakers. We compiled all the information currently available about the new 4K GH4 camera that we could get our hands on and broke it down.

There’s also a new (optional) YAGH interface designed for the GH4. It attaches to the bottom of the camera and gives you the ability to record full 4K as well as some other helpful inputs/outputs:

The YAGH box is pretty cool because it allows you to record in full 4K. The GH4 can record 4:2:0 8-bit internally or 4:2:2 8-bit via the HDMI, but through the YAGH you get full 4:2:2 10-bit 4K. Pair that with the XLR and other professional input/outputs it gives you and you’ve got a tool that is invaluable for low-budget filmmakers.

You may have already noticed from the specs above that the Panasonic’s 4K GH4 has some impressive slow-motion capabilities. While it can’t do high speed in 4K, it can do up to 96 fps in camera in HD. Not too shabby for a DSLR.

New Panasonic 4K GH Camera Will Ship In February For Under $2,000

This year at CES, 4K has been pushed hard to consumers through tons of new 4K displays, and even Sony’s new 4K Handycam. Not to be left out of the 4K race, Panasonic unveiled more details about its previously announced mirrorless GH 4K camera. While full specs haven’t been released, we have some exciting news about both the price point and the anticipated ship date.

Here are the 4K GH tech specs that Panasonic Engadget:

UHD content can be recorded at 200 Mbps
Output in a full live feed via a mini-HDMI port to display on a computer or record to a hard drive
Footage can be dumped straight to an SDXC
Micro 4/3 mount

The camera is supposed to be available this February and is rumored to have a price point of $2,000 or even less. That’s pretty exciting as it would make it the most affordable 4K camera on the market thus far.

Wonder if all the news of this budget-friendly 4K GH camera is making Blackmagic nervous since their 4K camera still hasn’t been seen?

Is Panasonic Making A 4K GH Camera?

It does look like good news is on the horizon has rumors about a Panasonic 4K GH camera have begun to spread.

Over on 4/3 Rumors, possible specs of the 4K GH were posted:

Expected price: €2799

Shooters haven’t been happy with the lack of slow-motion on cameras like the C100 and 5D Mark III. 4K at up to 30fps for the price is great, but we feel they could make it a home run if they manage to pull 60p out of it. If it isn’t just a rumor, this could be a pretty cool camera at a decent price!
