One of the more exciting aspects of the C200 is the inclusion of internal 4K Raw recording onto a single CFast 2.0 card in a brand new format called Cinema Raw Light.  The Canon C200 gives users an easy to work with compressed RAW format, a feature that at this point has only been done by Blackmagic and RED.

If you were hoping for an internal codec option of 10bit 4:2:2, you might be disappointed.  Internal codec options include only an 8bit 4:2:0 option in MP4 for non-raw recording.  It doesn’t look like the C200 will get a 10 bit 4:2:2 internal codec anytime soon, as the promised firmware update coming in 2018 will be XF-AVC YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit, recorded to SD cards, not the CFast card.

One of the most impressive features of the C200 is the autofocus capability, which blew reviewers’ minds when they tried it on a 200mm lens at f/4 shooting at a model walking towards the camera. The C200 kept the focus locked on the moving subject exceptionally well.

If you’re thinking about buying or renting the C300 Mark II or FS7, you’re exactly who we made this post and video for!

Both the Canon C300 Mark II and Sony FS7 have Super 35mm sensors, slow-motion capabilities, and record 4K internally.

There are, however, some differences between the two worth highlighting.

The C300 Mark II is the clear winner win it comes to internal recording. It shoots 12 bit 2K in 4:4:4, as well as 10 bit 4K in 4:2:2, both at a bit rate of 410 Mbps per second. The FS7 shoots 4K at 10 bit 4:2:2 as well as 1080p, both of those at 240 Mbps. You’re probably not going to see a huge difference for most applications, but if you are doing something like green screen work, the C300 Mark II is going to be a better choice.

One of the big considerations when thinking about the usability of the camera is how it responds to different lighting situations. The C300 Mark II has extra internal ND filters that the FS7 does not have. This means when you are shooting outside, the C300 will give you more flexibility in harsh daylight.

The C300 Mark II also has additional stops of dynamic range. On paper, it has 1 extra stop (15 stops), in our test we measured that it had closer to 2 extra, as compared to the FS7 (14 stops).

The Sony FS7 is superior to the C300 Mark II when it comes to slow-motion recording. The FS7 can shoot up to 60 fps at 4K and 180 fps at 1080p, without cropping the sensor. On the other hand, the C300 Mark II can only shoot 60 fps at 2K and 180 fps at 1080p. It’s also important to note that when shooting at higher frame rates on the C300 Mark II, the sensor is considerably cropped.

The two cameras use two different lens mounts. The C300 Mark II obviously uses the standard Canon EF mount (supposedly there is a PL mount coming soon and they can be interchanged), and the FS7 is equipped with Sony’s E-mount. The E-mount has a very short flange distance, it is easy to adapt it to both EF and PL. Of course, adapters add cost, and can sometimes be troublesome. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s still something to think about.

No doubt one of the biggest considerations between cameras is cost. The C300 Mark II is $16,000, the Sony FS7 comes in at about half the price ($8,000). You may need to buy a lens adapter for the FS7 so you can use popular lenses, but it still makes the camera considerably cheaper than the C300 Mark II.

You can get superb images from both cameras, so which is best for you is basically going to come down to the needs of your production. We always welcome people to ask us questions or come check out the cameras in person at our location in Los Angeles.

If you aren’t familiar with what’s new on the C300 Mark II, our very own Josh Burrows made a quick video to cover some of the highlights.

As Josh states, the biggest difference is the ability to shoot 4K. Higher frame rates are now possible, up to 120fps in 2K or HD.

The camera will use CFast cards instead of CF cards to handle the new data rate. It uses new batteries as well: the BPA-30 & BPA-60. These batteries are more expensive, $300 and $500 each, which is something to keep in mind if you are a shooter thinking about upgrading.

You’ve probably noticed from the photos that the C300 Mark II looks nearly identical to its original predecessor. It has a similar body design with a slightly updated LCD/Audio attachment. Shooters around the world rejoiced in unison upon learning the on-board mic is included so that scratch track is all yours! Happy syncing.

Instead of using CF cards, Canon is moving to the future with the inclusion of CFast cards. The C300 Mark II will have two CFast 2.0 slots and one SD card slot that supports 2K & HD recording in 4:2:0 35 Mbps/24 Mbps long-GOP.

The C300 Mark II will also be capable of shooting 4K internally, but 4K RAW can only be achieved externally with the help of a recorder. The internal 4K will be able to shoot up to 30fps at 10 bit 4:2:2.

What do you think of the C100 Mark II? Are you disappointed that Canon didn’t include 4K to its “C” line? After all, Sony’s FS7 is sold at a comparable price and offers higher frame rates and a higher resolution.

We think the C100 Mark II is a solid camera with some useful new features, but we suspect Canon supporters are going to be waiting for that next generation, entry-level camera with native 4K support.

One of the most significant new features of the C100 Mark II is its ability to shoot slow motion. The previous C100 runs at 30 fps, but the Mark II will give shooters the 60 fps they’ve been asking for. Also, while the new C100 Mark II has the same sensor as the C100, the camera does have a new image processor: the Canon DIGIC DV4. The primary difference with the new processor is the way it manages RGB, which should improve image quality.  In addition to improved RGB video processing, the camera’s dual codec capability supports simultaneous AVCHD and MP4 recording, including 59.94P capture along with slow and fast motion recording.

The C100 Mark II’s new EVF does look promising. It has a tiltable large rubber eyecup and looks similar, if not identical, to the one found on C300s. Hopefully, the EVF will also have an improved image, but that has not yet been confirmed. The LCD screen has been redesigned to rotate out from the side as opposed to the top. They have also added a joystick and other menu buttons directly to the menu so that you don’t have to use the side handle to control the camera. The screen is the same size as the C100 (3.5″), but it has been upgraded from LCD to OLED.

Canon’s C100 Mark II will ship standard with Canon’s Dual Pixel AF Technology. Canon released that technology almost two years and has offered shooters the option of sending their original C100 cameras in for the upgrade at the owner’s cost ($500). Recently, the company released several DSLRs with the technology (including the 7D Mark II). It appears that the Dual AF Technology will be a standard feature on Canon cameras moving forward.

Another update to the C100 that shooters will love is the ability to add a Rec709 LUT to the HDMI output while recording in C-log. Finally, the camera will have the ability to be controlled wirelessly via smartphone or computer as well as wirelessly transfer files.

At the time of writing, the Canon C100 Mark II will retail for $5499 and is expected to begin shipping this December.

The Canon 50-1000mm even has a built-in 1.5x extender that will turn it into an even more impressive 75-1500mm. This lens has a variable aperture, and Its widest is 5.0 between the 50-560mm range. Near the end of the lens range when using the doubler, the maximum aperture is down to a 13.35. Obviously not a lens that would get much, if any, non-cinema indoor use. It also weighs a whopping 14.5 lbs!

The Canon 50-1000mm Cine-Servo lens is going to be available in both EF and PL mounts. Hopefully, our friends over at Duclos will make a multi-mount for it (it’s on our Christmas wish list!). If you’re salivating over the lens make sure you have a high limit on your credit card because it’s going to cost a whopping $78,000 at the time of writing, and is expected to be available in early 2015.

While the Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus technology is not for every production or shooter, it could certainly come in handy during run-and-gun/one-man shooter situations. With many reality shows, documentaries, and ENG type productions now shooting on the C300, we can understand why Canon thought this would be a useful upgrade.

If you’re curious about how Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology works, let Canon explain it further:

“The EOS C300 camera with Dual Pixel AF technology features a CMOS sensor that consists of an array of pixels that each feature two separate photodiodes. By continuously comparing their outputs during AF mode, phase-difference autofocus helps ensure non-blurred images and smooth focus transitions even when the talent and/or camera are moving. The new feature places a high priority on maintaining sharp focus while, providing natural, smooth focus transitions with select Canon autofocus EF lenses – including newer-generation STM lenses – which offer even smoother and quieter operation.”

The upgrade will be available for the C300 in May. If you’d like to take advantage of the upgrade, there will be a $500 fee and your camera will have to be sent to a Canon service center.

Canon also announced that it is releasing the RC-V100 Remote Control for the C500, C300, and C100 cameras. With the RC-V100, you can control main camera functions such as white balance and exposure. It will be released in June and is expected to cost $2,999.

1. How does digital noise perform at ISO 80,000?
2. Does the new firmware improve lower ISO settings (i.e. Does ISO 850 have less digital noise on the new firmware vs the old)?

We put a quick video together to get some answers.

As you can see in the video, the answer to our first question “How bad is the digital noise at 80,000?” is: not great. We didn’t use any kind of noise reduction on the footage, but even if you did, we don’t believe the final product would be usable. I could see this possibly being useful for something like a documentary where getting the shot to tell the story is more important than a clean image.

Our second question was “Does the new C300 expanded ISO firmware improve lower ISO settings?” From the video we shot, it doesn’t appear that the new firmware has any significant improvement of lower ISO settings.

The new firmware updates for the Canon C300 and C100 also bring other new features to each camera.

C100 Firmware 1.0.2.1.00 Updates:

• Ability to move the magnification viewing area around the LCD using the MAGN Function.
• ISO up to 80,000 has been added.
• A Key Lock menu setting has been added which now makes it possible to lock all operations, including the START/STOP button.
• Peripheral Illumination Correction Data has been added for seven (7) Canon Cinema lenses (EF mount) and eleven (11) Canon EF Lenses.
• Internal camera menus are now controllable from buttons on the camera body. Previously, they were only controllable from the joystick grip unit.
• In addition to the [EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM], the function to enable continuous focusing and correct aperture on a subject in the middle of the screen when one of the two EF STM lenses is attached has been extended to include the [EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM] lens.

C300 Firmware Version 1.1.0.1.00 Updates:

• 1. Ability to move the magnification viewing area around the LCD using the MAGN Function.

The dual-pixel technology splits each pixel on the sensor into two halves. Then it compares the signals from each side, which lets the camera better judge which way to adjust focus.

Canon says the upgraded C100 will have a modified menu offering two options for “AF Mode” – One-Shot AF and Continuous Autofocus – with AF lock becoming an option for the camera’s assignable buttons.

Here’s what else Canon had to say about the C100 Update:

“The Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology helps provide smooth and consistent autofocus so that pans are natural-looking with subjects remaining focused even as they move. The compatibility of Dual Pixel CMOS AF with many Canon EF lenses combines outstanding optical tools with a wide range of creative options. 

By using Contrast AF signals to supplement the EOS C100 camera’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, you may be able to avoid blurring caused by the normal inability to detect the direction in which the focusing circuitry should move to help ensure consistent focus.”

The upgrade is expected to be available in February 2014. If you’re interested in getting your C100 upgraded, the cost will be $500 and the camera will have to be sent to Canon.

“I first met two time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Josh Greenbaum in October of 2007.  He emailed me randomly responding to an ad I had posted on Craig’s List wanting to rent one of my Panasonic HVX-200 cameras and a P2 Store.  He was working on a web series called “Border Patrol” at the time after winning the Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmakers Award.  “Border Patrol” was picked up by and subsequently aired on Comedy Central.

Since those days, Josh has gone on to do quite a few more web, television and feature film projects, most recently, “The Short Game” – a feature documentary we are very proud to have rented producer and fellow rental client Chris Leggett 14 Canon C300 Cameras to film.  We are very proud to continue our rental relationship with both Chris and Josh which is now going on six years strong!”
