A Message from Stray Angel Films

For the safety and health of both our staff and you, our loyal friends and clients, present and future orders at Stray Angel Films are officially moving to an appointment-only model at the time of writing. We’re monitoring the governmental response carefully each day, and we have a plan for temporary closure should a ‘shelter-in-place’ order be put into effect for Los Angeles County.

In the wake of Coronavirus, we’ve asked ourselves how we can help the broader community beyond staying at home to help mitigate the spread. If you can manage, consider a donation to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. And if you’re healthy, willing, and able, the American Red Cross is in dire need of blood donations with drives canceled around the country. Finally, with the new requirements on Animal Care Centers to limit services, the time is now to provide foster care for a wonderful cat or dog if there ever was one. Visit NKLA to learn more about setting up an appointment, and help alleviate some of the pressure on our four-legged friends.

As we all do our part, and while we may not have hit bottom yet, we will get through this together. Sometimes we wonder how we ever ended up so lucky to be able to make long-lasting friendships and do what we love every day. This video is a testament to that cinema magic we’ve created together right here at Stray Angel Films, and if we had but one regret, it’s that three minutes is hardly long enough to fit everything in!

We’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge those of you that have been with us since the beginning, having witnessed our transformation into the healthy and bustling company you see today. This journey hasn’t been easy, but the journeys worth taking never are. Your unrelenting advocacy and support mean the world to us, and we can’t thank you enough for sticking by our side through it all.

1917’s Roger Deakins & ARRI’s Alexa Mini LF Make Magic

1917 is a World War I drama centered around the Western Front, with British and German trench networks snaking in unison along a French countryside hollowed out by the scars of battle. Viewers are taken on an intimate journey, following two British soldiers played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman. The pair are desperate to deliver a message to their allies before the next scheduled attack wave, but to get there in time means risking everything to cross No Man’s Land. If they don’t, they know there are 1600 lives at stake, the Germans waiting in ambush on the other side.

Written and directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes, this Story of a Messenger is inspired by the tale woven in his grandfather Alfred’s autobiography on the Battle of Poelcappelle. Mendes takes some creative liberties but holds true to the spirit of the day in telling his own story with 1917, the incredible film leading the way with Ten Oscar nominations, including: Best Picture, Writing (Original Screenplay), and Cinematography.

Mendes partnered with another Oscar-winner in cinematographer Roger Deakins to capture 1917 in the “One Shot” style, mirroring the work famously done by Hitchcock’s Rope in 1948, and more recently in 2014 with Alejandro Iñárritu’s Birdman. In doing so, Mendes and Deakins made life difficult for the production team, but they also knew going into it that the upside far outweighed the risks all the same. Proof positive, the final result is a breathtaking thing to witness high up on the silver screen, the accolades more than warranted for their efforts.

To make life just a little easier for the camera operators that had to weave in and out of battlefield lockstep with the lead characters, Deakins turned to ARRI and their Alexa large-format series to make the magic happen. As luck would have it, the company was able to fast track their new Mini LF, arriving just in time for the production, and that makes 1917 the first to feature the company’s latest exciting camera.

In an interview with ARRI, Deakins states:

I like cameras to be small and intimate. I like shooting with a small crew. I don’t want the technology and the presence of the film crew to overwhelm the scene.

GoPro augments its already impressive action camera line with the HERO8 Black, the versatile next-generation action cam designed to capture smooth, stable footage of your latest adventure, from a simple boat trip to a wild jump-off-a-mountain ride. The HERO8 Black features updated HyperSmooth 2.0 stabilization to produce smooth, gimbal-like movement at all supported frame rates, without the need for a gimbal. Additional updates include a sleeker physical design with a “folding fingers” type base for fast mounting, a redesigned battery door for quicker battery changes, a lens with twice the impact resistance as the HERO7, an optional Battery Mod for nearly 2.5x more battery life, an optional flip-up Display Mod to make viewing your frame easier, an optional LED Light Mod, and an optional Media Mod to expand your accessory possibilities.

The GoPro HERO8 Black supports up to UHD 4K video resolutions, and time-lapse, up to 1080p240 slow motion, and super-slow-motion video. Still images can be captured in up to 12MP resolution in bursts of up to 30 images per second with the updated SuperPhoto with HDR support that helps reduce blur and enhance detail in low-light situations. It also features an updated Night-Lapse function to shoot and process up to 4K time-lapses at night. The LiveBurst function allows you to record 1.5 seconds before and after your photo to give you more choices for the best frame. The lens field of view (FOV) options increase to four modes: Narrow, Linear at 24.4mm, Wide at 16.5mm, and SuperView at 15.1mm.

Like its predecessor, the HERO8 Black supports direct streaming to Facebook Live. It’s also waterproof to 33′, suiting it for surfing, snorkeling, and swimming activities. Separately available floats and housings are available for additional water support and even deeper underwater activities down to 196′. The touchscreen provides quick and easy management, but when your hands are full, the HERO8 Black understands 15 voice commands in over ten languages and accents so you can verbally control the HERO8 Black. Just shout “GoPro, take a photo,” and your HERO8 will use your current settings to snap a photo, making selfies a breeze.

Introducing The New SmallHD Focus 7 Bolt 500 RX

The SmallHD FOCUS 7 Bolt 500 RX on-camera monitor integrates Teradek’s Bolt 500 wireless receiver with the FOCUS 7 daylight-viewable on-camera monitor. Using the built-in receiver, the FOCUS 7 can receive up to 1080p60 video from Teradek’s Bolt 500, Bolt 500 LT or Bolt 500 XT transmitters, or from a SmallHD’s FOCUS Bolt 500 TX, with a line-of-sight transmission distance of up to 500′.

Thanks to its intuitive and large touchscreen, the FOCUS 7 Bolt’s touchscreen controls takes the hassle out of wireless pairing. ACs can easily pair the 7-inch monitor/receiver to a FOCUS Bolt 500 TX or Teradek Bolt 500 transmitter and enjoy exceptional HD wireless video with no perceptible delay (less than 1 ms).

The SmallHD OS3 software and PageBuilder user interface provide a variety of tools including HD waveform, vectorscope, false color and focus assist/peaking, anamorphic de-squeeze, framing guides, and storage of unlimited 3D LUTs via SD card. A built-in full-size SD card slot provides even more utility, allowing the application of real-time 3D LUTs, monitor profiles, and image overlays for shot matching. For focus pullers, the Teradek RT Screen Overlay enables distance markings to appear on-screen in real-time.

Sigma Cine Primes: Professional Lenses at an Affordable Price

Founded on the success of the Sigma ART line of still lenses, the new Sigma Cine FF High-Speed Prime line blows away other lenses at these price points, both optically and mechanically, and competes with high-end primes many times more expensive.

Sigma’s FF High-Speed Prime Lenses combine the same high-quality optics and mechanics of their Global Vision still line in a cine-oriented design. This 20mm PL mount prime is a wide focal length in the series, offering full-frame sensor coverage, 6 to 8K resolution, and a T1.5 aperture in a compact, lightweight form; it’s also available in Canon EF and Sony E mounts. A common 95mm front diameter and similar physical attributes across the lens line make it easier and quicker to mount lens accessories such as matte boxes, follow focuses, and lens control motors.

The 9-bladed iris produces pleasing out-of-focus bokeh effects, and ghosting and flaring have been minimized. Color reproduction is standardized for easier color correction. Each lens in the range offers consistent lens gear positions and 180° of focus barrel rotation. The FF High-Speed Primes also feature a clickless iris with linear markings, dampeners on each gear ring for silent operation, industry-standard 0.8 module gear pitch, and engraved markings for durability. Focus marks are in feet with select markings in luminous paint for easy visibility in low light.

The C-Series From Hive Lighting

After the incredible success of the Wasp 100-C, Hive introduced the Bee 50-C and Hornet 200-C, creating Hive’s “C-Series” family of Omni-Color LEDs, offering unparalleled color control, and versatility in a point source LED.

Both the Bee 50-C and the Hornet 200-C have the same groundbreaking Perfect SHOT color controls offered by the Wasp 100-C. The Hornet 200-C is a 150W Omni-Color LED, it weights only 2.6lbs, is only 8” (200mm) long and is brighter than a 1000W incandescent source. 2.5X brighter than the original Wasp 100-C this is the brightest single point source color-changing LED on the market. Hive Lighting offers a par reflector and adjustable Fresnel for the Hornet 200-C and it can be combined with a wide variety of classic light modifiers from video production like “softboxes” and “beauty dishes” from photography.
