Sigma’s FF High-Speed Prime Lenses combine the same high-quality optics and mechanics of their Global Vision still line in a cine-oriented design. This 20mm PL mount prime is a wide focal length in the series, offering full-frame sensor coverage, 6 to 8K resolution, and a T1.5 aperture in a compact, lightweight form; it’s also available in Canon EF and Sony E mounts. A common 95mm front diameter and similar physical attributes across the lens line make it easier and quicker to mount lens accessories such as matte boxes, follow focuses, and lens control motors.

The 9-bladed iris produces pleasing out-of-focus bokeh effects, and ghosting and flaring have been minimized. Color reproduction is standardized for easier color correction. Each lens in the range offers consistent lens gear positions and 180° of focus barrel rotation. The FF High-Speed Primes also feature a clickless iris with linear markings, dampeners on each gear ring for silent operation, industry-standard 0.8 module gear pitch, and engraved markings for durability. Focus marks are in feet with select markings in luminous paint for easy visibility in low light.

Image Quality

To put it simply, the Master Prime line creates a clean image with no distortion and a great resolution. You will easily find these lenses on many high-performance sets, where image quality is a priority.

One notable characteristic of the Master and Ultra Prime Lines is that they feature virtually zero distortion even at their widest focal lengths of 12mm.  This means that footage can be matched easily with computer-generated imagery.

Low Light Performance

The Master Primes are capable of optimal low light performance. With a constant aperture of T1.3 across the entire focal range, these lenses are great at letting in light when you really need it the most.  Even wide open at T1.3, they’re sharp and feature great image quality.

1. Bausch & Lomb Super Baltar Set

The Super Baltar lenses are truly vintage, going all the way back to the 1950’s. You already know they can’t compare to modern glass in the way of sharpness. Instead, the lenses can give you a very unique soft look, almost like you’re using a Black Pro-Mist filter, with [lenty of flare.

2. Canon K-35 Lens Set

These Canon K-35 are fast, vintage cinema lenses from the 70’s, and they were used to shoot the 1986 film, Aliens. While they’re not as sharp as modern lenses, they do offer up a contrast that might be just the ticket for your next project.

3. Cooke Speed Panchro

The Cooke Speed Panchros were used by Kubrick, Cassavetes, and many other Hollywood directors. We saw the new Summicron-C lenses at yesterday’s Band Pro Open House. The Leica Rep told us that initially there will be a set of 6 lenses (18, 25, 35, 50, 75 and 100 mm). In the future, Leica will add four more focal lengths (21, 29, 40, and 135 mm) for a total of ten. The set of six retails for $97,500 or about $16,250 per lens. Comparatively, the Summilux-C lenses are about $24,750 each.

While we haven’t tested the Summicrons ourselves, it has been reported that Resolution, contrast, and MTF achieve the same lofty heights as the other high-end lenses such as Master Primes. Breathing is a little more noticeable than on the Summiluxes, which is almost nonexistent, but still on par with other premium lenses.

“The system utilizes a standardized set of mount flanges including PL, Panavision, Nikon F and Canon EF, coupled with a custom sub-mount developed for each zoom lens. A truly simple yet elegant process that allows a single lens to be used across a wide range of cameras regardless of the mount required. “

This mount is pretty amazing, providing unique value to rental houses and the shooters who own their own lenses but rent cameras on a per-project basis. One of the hesitations some people had about purchasing Canon Cinema Lenses is that the mounts are not swappable. When investing so much in the glass, it helps to be able to use it across multiple cameras. With this mount, you can swap between PL, Panavision, Nikon F, and Canon EF mount in seconds!

At the time of writing, the Multi-Mount is currently only available for the Canon CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L SP Wide-Angle Cinema Zoom Lens with PL Mount and the Canon CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L SP Telephoto Cinema Zoom Lens with PL Mount. The mount is entirely non-destructive and can be reversed at any time.

Here is the pricing as listed on the Duclos Website:
“If you’re sending your lens in for the Multi-Mount modification which includes the Sub-Mount and one Mount Flange of choice, and Mount Cap, the cost is $1,900. Each additional Mount Flange is $400. If you would like to purchase the lenses directly from Duclos Lenses, the cost is reduced to $1,500 + the lens.

These lenses have fast become a favorite of DP’s and shooters such as Harris Savides and Tom Lowe. It’s no wonder why, they have pretty much everything you would want in cinema lenses. The lenses are built with high-quality materials, featuring a fast T-Stop of 1.4 across the set. They also have great contrast throughout the frame and because they are all the same length and have the same 95mm threaded lens front it is extremely easy to swap between lenses on set.

Now it has been announced that Leica is creating a new set of “budget” cinema lenses, the Summicron-C lens set. It is rumored that the Summicron-C’s will cost about $17,000 a piece which means it would cut the cost of a rental in half from the Summilux.

Hopefully, Leica will show these off this year at NAB and we’ll have more information to go on.
