Schneider Enters The Affordable Cinema Prime Lens Market

An increasing number of productions are using affordably priced cinema lenses and currently, Zeiss has the market cornered with their CP.2 set. Schneider has its eye on a piece of that pie with the newly announced Xenon FF Primes.

The Schneider Xenon FF Primes serve as a little brother to the company’s pro line of 35mm lenses, the Cine-Xenars. The lenses offer full-frame coverage, have a common speed of T2.1, as well as the same 100mm front diameter and 95mm filter thread across the set. At first, they will be available in 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm lengths. While the lenses will be offered in Nikon F mount, Canon EF mount, and PL mount, there has been no confirmation that the mounts are interchangeable.

To compete with both the Zeiss CP.2s and Canon CN-E lenses, the Xeons are expected to be priced between $3k & $5k per lens. No word yet on when they will be available.

With Zeiss, Canon, and Schneider all now in the affordable cine lens market, we can’t help but wonder if Tokina has anything up their sleeves….
