At first glance, the 5D Mark IV may look very similar to its predecessor, but underneath lies a whole new beast.
Probably the most exciting new feature the 5D Mark IV brings to the table is the ability to shoot 4K video, something even the Mark III lacked. Other new features include Canon’s Dual Auto Focus technology, built-in Wi-Fi/NFC, interval timer, and GPS.
The new 30.4 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 6 image processor make the Mark IV DSLR both a video and photo monster.
During continuous shooting, the 5D Mark IV can capture up to 7 frames per second. The impressive native ISO range of 100-32000 can be expanded to ISO 50-102400, offering you the low-light performance you’ve come to expect from the Canon 5D line of DSLRs.
The new 4K video option allows recording up to 30 fps at 500 Mbps. Full HD 1080p can be recorded at 60 fps. If you need to go film even slower, 720p HD video can be recorded up to 120 fps.
In camera 4K footage has 4:2:2 and 8-bit color depth. 1080p footage is recorded in camera with 4:2:0, but can be saved via HDMI to an external recorder with 4:2:2.
If you’re using the 5D Mark IV for photography, there are several new features to be excited about, mainly Dual Pixel RAW. This new technology works by taking two photos, both 30.4 megapixels, using the left and right halves of a single pixel. With all this information, the camera can allow you to make some adjustments in post such as slightly shifting focus and reducing flare/ghosting.
The 5D Mark IV records to CF Cards via the dual CompactFlash slots and to an SD card via a single slot.
