Atomos was kind enough to let us borrow one of the first production units of the new Samurai Blade External Recorder. The original Samurai External Recorder is a hot rental for us, so we were very excited to test out all of the features of the new Blade.

The Samurai Blade records the same quality as the Samurai: 10-bit 4:2:2 Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD files, but has some great new features that make it a very useful onboard monitor (the director’s cut feature is also available on original Samurai Recorders via a firmware update).

Over very own Josh Burrows shot a quick video overviewing the Atomos Samurai Blade:

The new Samurai Blade features include:

  • New 1280×720 Screen Resolution
  • Full Waveform
  • Vectorscope
  • Director’s Cut

While the recording quality hasn’t changed, we shot some test videos with the C300 for your viewing pleasure:
