DJI made themselves a well-known name to filmmakers a couple of years ago when they released they Phantom drone. Suddenly anyone with a thousand bucks to spare and a GoPro was taking flight and capturing sweeping aerial images previous amateurs were unable to get. Now, DJI is once again leading the way in the prosumer drone market with the release of their new 4K Inspire 1 drone.
The DJI Inspire is a bug step up from the DJI Phantom in many ways, though it is also worth noting that it is about three times the price. The Inspire 1 includes it’s own built-in 4K, 3-axis gimbal camera. The camera is detachable which is really cool, so in the future you could keep the same rig and just upgrade to a newer camera. The drone’s also arms lift up when in flight so that you can get a full, unobstructed 360 degree pan with the camera.
The Inspire 1 uses a GPS-based stabilization system that is more advanced than others, able to hold a position even when experiencing wind interference, can compensate for overzealous pilot inputs to help avoid stalling, automatically brings the aircraft home in the event of signal loss or at the press of a button, and makes possible a number of semi-automated flight modes that can be enabled through the app. There is also an “indoor” mode which relies on Optical Flow technology – essentially a special camera – provide stability indoors or in other contexts where GPS is unavailable.
