Setlife Magazine put together this graphic showing which cameras the 2013 Best Picture Nominees were shot on. We all know that content is king and that you can shoot a great film on an $100,000 Alexa or an $800 T2i, however, it’s always interesting to see what the big boys are shooting on.
I’m sure you noticed just by glancing at the graphic that it appears ARRI has swept the board. This is no surprise as ARRI is one of the most trusted brand in the industry (they have been making cameras since 1924, you know). A lot of people have been commenting on the lack of RED cameras, but we think this is more of a coincidence than telling sign.
It’s great to see the Canon C500 up there under Wolf Of Wall Street, even though it was likely only used for shots with the MoVI. The C300 was used in both Her and Captain Phillips for some run and gun shots. Even the GoPro got a mention for its use on Captain Phillips.
While it isn’t surprising, it might still be worth mentioning that only four out of the nine Best Picture Nominees were shot on film. With Wolf Of Wall Street being the first film to be distributed exclusively digitally, it probably won’t be long before that number dwindles even more.
